The Caretaker: BookMarked!
Spicy Historical Fiction.
The Caretaker by Louise Mayberry follows Charley Lovejoy and his sister Hetty in 1840s rural New York. Before the story begins, the author includes a content warning for racial language and offensive material—though I personally didn’t come across anything of that nature, I still appreciate the heads-up.
At just over 300 pages, I found this to be a slow burn in the best way. Charley, a canal worker, is hired for the winter to protect the students, staff, and grounds of a boarding school for mixed-race children. The school is widely criticized and targeted by townspeople who attempt to sabotage it and drive out the teachers. Despite this hostility, the staff remains resilient, and Charley’s strength, experience, and unwavering dedication make him the perfect addition to their community.
This story has a bit of everything—adventure, action, romance, and drama—making it a great pick for anyone who loves Historical Fiction. While I was pulled out of the story a couple of times, I was quickly drawn back in with the turn of the next page. There are a few flirtatious moments throughout, and one steamy—but tasteful—scene near the end that adds just the right amount of spice.
Overall, The Caretaker is a heartfelt and compelling read that blends history, emotion, and tension in a way that stays with you long after you close the book. The characters are richly developed, the atmosphere is immersive, and the themes of resilience and community are beautifully explored. I’m looking forward to reading more from Louise Mayberry—her storytelling has a quiet strength that makes me excited to see what she writes next.
